What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of various conditions related to the pelvic floor or symptoms that manifest in this region.  The pelvic floor includes muscles, ligaments, nerves and connective tissues.  It plays on important role in the body by providing support to this area.

The Active Recovery Clinic has trained physiotherapists in the treatment of pelvic health dysfunction.  Jennifer Townsend is Rostered with the College of Physiotherapist as a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist. She has her level I, II and III from Pelvic Health Solutions and is trained to do both internal and external examinations of the pelvic region. 

Who Needs Pelvic Health Rehabilitation?

Pelvic floor rehabilitation is beneficial for those suffering from:

HYPOTONICITY (Weak Pelvic floor muscles). This can lead to stress incontinence, urge incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse Incontinence is not a normal part of gaining.

HYPERTONICITY (Tight pelvic floor muscles).  This can lead to urinary and fecal urgency, urge incontinence, chronic pelvic pain dyspareunia, vaginismus, vulvodynia, pudendal neuralgia, interstitial cystitis, chronic prostatitis. 

There are several good studies that indicate that physiotherapists trained in pelvic floor rehabilitation should be the first line of defense, before surgical consultation, for stress, urge and mixed incontinence in women.
